Bupropion, a medication used for depression and smoking cessation, can cause a few types of “dissociation.” One type involves the medication’s effects on emotional and reward processing, where it may initially reduce negative biases in emotional processing but exacerbate reward deficits. Another type is related to the medication’s acid-base properties, including its acid dissociation constant (pKa). Finally, a dissociation can occur in the context of overdose, where seizures and other symptoms may be observed, even with delayed onset in extended-release formulations.
